You might probably have heard before about the vagus nerve, either in high school Biology, or now that the movement of awakening has become more and more popular. However, you possibly have questions regarding what it is, exactly, and what its functions are.
What does the Vagus Nerve do?
The vagus nerve fulfills various different functions in the body:
• Motor: it provides innervations to most of the muscles that are found in the pharynx, larynx, and soft palate, to control their motor functions. • Parasympathetic: as we mentioned, it provides innervations to muscles of the trachea, bronchi, and gastro-intestinal tract, and is in charge of regulating the rhythm of the heart and breath, reason why it has historically also been known as the pneumogastric nerve. • Sensory: it provides innervation to the skin of the external acoustic meatus as well as the laryngopharynx and larynx’s internal surfaces. Still linked with its pneumogastric control, it additionally provides visceral sensation to the heart and viscera of the abdomen. • Special sensory: thanks to the way it provides innervation, it also offers the sensation of taste to the root of the tongue and the epiglottis. This, however, is not the full sensation of taste that we experiment, which is actually provided to the posterior 1/3 of the tongue by the glossopharyngeal nerve.
