पांडुरंग सदाशिव साने उर्फ साने गुरुजी यांना २४ डिसेंबर १८९९ ते ११ जून १९५० असे जेमतेम पन्नास वर्षांचे आयुष्य लाभले. त्यांच्या व्यक्तिमत्वाला अनेक आयाम होते; पण, कवी, लेखक, अनुवादक, संपादक, समाजसुधारक आणि स्वातंत्र्यलढ्यातील नेते अशी त्यांची सप्तरंगी ओळख अधिक गडद आहे. त्यांनी लिहिलेली लहान-मोठी अशी सव्वाशे पुस्तके प्रकाशित झालेली आहेत, त्यातील अर्ध्याहून अधिक पुस्तके आजच्या समाजमनाचाही ठाव घेणारी आहेत.

साने गुरुजींच्या व्यक्तित्वाचे व कार्याचे वर्णन करण्यासाठी अनेक विशेषणे वापरता येतील, पण त्यांच्या केवळ साहित्याचा विचार करता 'मानवी संस्कृतीचा सर्वश्रेष्ठ मराठी प्रवक्ता' हे संबोधन अधिक योग्य ठरेल. अशा या गुरुजींची चरित्रे अनेक लहान-थोरांनी लिहिलेली आहेत, मात्र त्यांचे समग्र म्हणावे असे हे एकमेव चरित्र आहे.

त्यांच्या धडपडणाऱ्या मुलांपैकी एक असलेले राजा मंगळवेढेकर यांनी हे लिहिले आहे. कुमार व युवा अवस्थेत त्यांना गुरुजींचा सहवास लाभला आणि त्यानंतरचे अर्धशतक त्यांनी गुरुजींचेच विचार-कार्य पुढे चालू ठेवले. गुरुजींच्या विचार-कार्याचा गाभा व आवाका समजून घेण्यासाठी फक्त एकच पुस्तक वाचायचे असेल तर ते कोणते, या प्रश्नाचे उत्तर "साने गुरुजींची जीवनगाथा" हेच आहे. Pandurang Sadashiv Sane aka Sane Guruji had a life of barely fifty years from 24 December 1899 to 11 June 1950. His personality had many dimensions; But, he is popularly known as a poet, writer, translator, editor, social reformer and freedom struggle leader. 125 books written by him, big and small, have been published. Among them, more than half of the books are still popular with today's readers.

Many adjectives can be used to describe Sane Guruji's personality and work, but if we consider only his literature, it would be more appropriate to call him 'the best Marathi spokesman of human culture'. His biographies have been written by many authors. But this is the only book that can be called his comprehensive biography.

It was written by Raja Mangalvedhekar. Mangalvedhekar was in the company of Guruji in his youth. And for the next half century he continued his work with Guruji's thoughts and principles. If one has to read only one book to understand the core and scope of Guruji's thought and work, the answer to that question is 'Sane Gurujinchi Jeevan Gatha'
