#1 I was assigned to the Homicide Bureau of the Maricopa County Attorney’s Office in Phoenix, Arizona, in October 1996. I had been on call for twenty-four hours after receiving a phone call from Sergeant Dana McBride, a supervisor with the Mesa Police Department, about a homicide.

#2 I walked through the house, covering my shoes with protective booties, and noted how orderly everything was. There were no signs of trouble. The only out-of-place item was a steam vacuum cleaner that had been left standing in the middle of the living room floor.

#3 The bedroom had a king-size bed, and was neat and organized. There was a large amount of blood on the carpet, and detectives were processing the bed area.

#4 The orderliness of the closet contrasted with the chaos of the bathroom, and I saw a sink streaked with blood. The blood covered the faucets and was splattered on the mirror. It was clear that Travis had been stabbed in the chest, throat, and temple.
