#1 I was never a Daddy’s girl. I loved my father, but I didn’t understand him. He was an aspiring entrepreneur, and he always believed a million-dollar idea was just around the corner. He loved cruising neighborhoods in our VW van, looking for garage sale signs.

#2 I was eager to learn how to knit a whole sweater, using the pattern as my tutor. I was close to finishing, but I couldn’t make the instructions make sense to me. I ended up just looping the yarn over the needle and hoping for the best.

#3 I made a sweater that was three sizes too big for me, and it was ugly. I was so nervous to show it to my father, who had high hopes for me. I dropped a few stitches right at the bust line, and I thought it would be fine to sew them closed with white thread.

#4 My father, who had started and scrapped at least four new businesses since the start of that year, thought I’d done something great. I realized that starting things and finishing them was what gave him the most satisfaction.
