The first woman to win the Pulitzer Prize for fiction (for "Age of Innocence"), Wharton enjoyed an astonishing career as a short story writer and novelist, blazing a trail for the female writers who followed her. Raised among the elite of New York society, Wharton was able to offer a rare glimpse into the upper reaches of the city's ultra rich in both "Age of Innocence" and "House of Mirth" while at the same time creating two of the most beloved American novels set in the country, "Summer" and "Ethan Frome."
