#1 The Sierra Madre has one of the largest rain forests in the Philippines. It’s home to a surviving hunter-gatherer group called the Agta. The Agta value storytellers more than those who bring home the bacon and snacks.

#2 I had found something beautiful to give to the love of my life. I had arranged for my family, both sets of her parents, and her best friends to be present the moment I popped the question. It was a challenge to coordinate the schedules of twenty-plus loved ones from around the world, but with help from others, it happened.

#3 The proposal took place at my parents’ house in Jacksonville, Florida. I gave Demi a small velvet box that contained a non-engagement ring. I figured that if she had any expectations of getting an engagement ring, she would be disappointed by the non-engagement ring.

#4 I took Demi to the pond where I had buried my previous dog, Otis. I had prayed about where to go to college, and now another event was emerging that would change the course of both of our lives.
