#1 My best friend from college and I had just wrapped up a phone call. She had called to inform me that her son had just accepted a summer internship position near Lansing, Michigan. The job required him to commute from Detroit, which would be an hour each way. She asked if he could spend the night with us on those nights, sleeping in our guestroom.

#2 Inward me and outward me constantly battled when it came to saying yes or no to a friend’s request for help with their son. Inward me was afraid she wouldn’t be able to handle it, while outward me was afraid she would disappoint her friend.

#3 When you’re trying to convince yourself to do something, listen to the voice of outward me. She’s just trying to help you. But when you’re trying to convince yourself not to do something, listen to the voice of inward me. He’s sure that you should do it.

#4 People pleasing is when we say or do something that placates others in order to keep conflict at bay. It can be a result of our desire to be liked, or it may be a result of our desire to help others.
