Eight-year-old Jerry wants only one thing for Christmas: a book of his very own.

He loves learning to read, but every book he opens belongs to his school. At home, money is scarce, and even necessities are difficult to afford. Still, Jerry dreams of the perfect volume—large enough to carry beneath his arm, small enough to hide beneath his pillow, and filled with colorful adventures featuring pirates, dragons, soldiers, explorers, and wild animals.
