Intermediate Types among Primitive Folk

"Intermediate Types among Primitive Folk" is a book by Edward Carpenter, a British socialist poet and philosopher, published in 1914. In this work, Carpenter examines gender and sexuality across various cultures, exploring the concept of "intermediate types" or individuals who do not conform to traditional gender norms. He discusses the presence of non-binary and gender-nonconforming individuals within indigenous societies, challenging prevalent Western notions of gender and sexuality. Carpenter's anthropological and historical analysis aims to dismantle rigid binary constructs and promote understanding and acceptance of diverse gender expressions. By drawing on a range of cultural examples, he highlights the existence and acceptance of gender diversity in different civilizations. "Intermediate Types among Primitive Folk" remains a significant contribution to the understanding of non-binary gender identities and the cultural variability of gender roles in human societies.
