Set during the French Revolution, ‘Scaramouche’ by Rafael Sabatini is a classic novel of swashbuckling adventure and sweeping romance is also a thought-provoking commentary on class, inequality, and the individual's role in society-a story that has become Rafael Sabatini's enduring legacy. It tells the story of an unlikely hero during the French Revolution. Andre-Louis Moreau, a lawyer, is transformed from cynic to idealist as circumstances force him to change sides several times during the conflict in France. He becomes a revolutionary, politician, and fencing master, confounding his enemies with his powerful orations and swordsmanship. Rafael Sabatini’s 1921 novel has been adapted numerous times, most famously in 1952 with Stewart Granger in the title role. A romantic tale of a young aristocrat's adventures during the French Revolution. At one point the hero joins a theater troupe to portray ‘Scaramouche’. He also becomes a lawyer, a politician, and a lover, confounding his enemies with his elegant oration and precise swordsmanship. An excellent swashbuckler!
