The Mummy

Written in 1827 by a woman barely out of her teens, this astonishing early work of science fiction leaps to the year 2126, where a resurrected Egyptian pharaoh returns to judge a future age.

Decades before the imitators of Mary Shelley found their feet, Jane C. Loudon – later celebrated as a pioneering horticultural writer – conjured a twenty-second century of aerial travel, weather control, and reanimation. When the mummified Cheops is jolted back to life, he descends upon a Britain of intrigue and invention, dispensing counsel and mischief in equal measure. Part Gothic marvel, part political satire, and part visionary forecast, The Mummy! A Tale of the Twenty-Second Century anticipates ideas that would not flourish in the genre for another hundred years, and remains one of the strangest and most inventive fictions of its era.
