That was the question that Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy posed to director J.J. Abrams, kicking off the latest era of Star Wars storytelling. J.J. Abrams and Lawrence Kasdan were tasked with writing the first movie of the trilogy, and for forging the path for the future of the franchise.

2015's "The Force Awakens" was a monumental movie in Star Wars history. It brought back the characters from the original trilogy, and introduced new ones that would be heroes and heroines to a new generation.

But continuing the Skywalker Saga was no easy feat. And in addition to walking the finest of lines between nostalgia and a fresh take on a galaxy far, far away, one wrong move could have crippled what Disney CEO Bob Iger called "J.J.'s $4-billion dollar movie."
