Exhibit Piece is one of Philip K. Dick’s most fascinating explorations of identity, memory, and the fragile nature of reality. In a future where history is preserved through full-scale reconstructions, George Miller is a historian so devoted to the mid-20th century that he dresses like a man from the 1950s, carries a vintage briefcase, and speaks in outdated slang. When he hears voices inside a sealed exhibit, Miller goes to investigate and suddenly finds himself living in the world he was supposed to be studying. He has a wife, children, coworkers, and memories of a life that feels completely real. Is he trapped inside an exhibit, hallucinating, or experiencing something far stranger?

The more Miller tries to understand what has happened, the more convincing his new surroundings become. His family knows him, his job awaits him, and everyday details seem perfectly natural. Yet memories of the History Agency and his colleague Fleming remain. With two seemingly authentic lives competing in his mind, Miller must determine which world he actually belongs to.

Philip K. Dick (1928–1982) became one of science fiction’s most influential authors. His fiction frequently placed ordinary people in extraordinary situations where familiar assumptions about reality suddenly became unreliable. His novels and stories inspired films including Blade Runner, Total Recall, Minority Report, and A Scanner Darkly, while The Man in the High Castle became a celebrated television series.

Dick published dozens of novels and more than 100 short stories during his career. Today his distinctive combination of science fiction, psychological uncertainty, and shifting realities continues to attract new generations of readers. Exhibit Piece offers an early example of the ideas that would become trademarks of his work.
