The family bank account is usually empty, since my father’s once-pristine 1955 Buick Skylark, purchased with the proceeds from the sale of our suburban Boston house, had depreciated immediately after he drove it out of the dealership’s lot.

#2 I was determined to never end up like my father, who died of suicide. I was not going to die poor and sick, and I was determined to have a successful life.
