Eighty years since the last major, single-authored regional geography of Great Britain was published, the country’s landscape is now very different from what it was in the middle of last century. Public interest in it, however, is as great as it was then. Television offers programmes about its coasts, hills and cities, government frets about it, and ecologists worry about what we have done to it. Students of urban design and landscape appreciation have developed new ways of looking at it, but professional geographers have largely ignored it.
