Proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) are the treatment of choice for conditions such as esophagitis and peptic ulcer disease, and they are among the most prescribed medications in the United States. In 2016, one of the PPIs was dispensed more than 70 million times in the United States.

Inappropriate PPI use either due to prolonged use or lacking an appropriate indication has been linked with several adverse events such as bone fractures, pneumonia, and kidney damage, especially in older people. Nitric oxide (NO) is a potent vasodilator that plays a critical role in blood pressure (BP) regulation.7 Recent studies have shown the importance of the nitrate–nitrite–NO pathway in the production of NO. The conversion of nitrite to NO in the stomach is dependent on the presence of gastric acid.8 PPIs are highly effective in suppressing gastric acid secretion and are hypothesized to affect NO production from nitrate/nitrites.

Parkinson's

Living within 1 mile of a golf course was associated with more than double the odds of developing Parkinson's disease compared with living more than 6 miles away, found researchers led by Brittany Krzyzanowski, PhD, of the Barrow Neurological Institute in Phoenix, reported in JAMA Network Open. May 2025. This was a study done in Minnesota involving 419 Parkinson's cases and 5,113 controls (median age was 72) from 1991 to 2015. They collected data from 139 golf courses and 224 water service areas.

The odds of getting Parkinson's disease decreased by 9% for every 1-mile increase in distance from a golf course, up to 18 miles.
