Robert Redford's legacy is vast. To honor his passing, we're re-airing one of our favorite episodes: The Great Waldo Pepper. Fun fact: Roger, Gala, and Quentin viewed this movie on film at The New Beverly Cinema. It's co-hit, The Sting, was also supposed to be featured in this episode, but we ended up letting The Great Waldo Pepper stand alone.

In this sequel to the smash hit, The Bad News Bears are back and on their way to Houston to play an exhibition game. The only problem? They have no coach! Quentin and Roger discuss how Jackie Earle Hailey earns his spot as top billed, how the film deals with issues like a true 70’s movie, and the lessons that this film can teach you as both a child and an adult.

Quentin and Roger walk us through this napoleonic wars adventure flick and highlight their favorite parts. Quentin and Roger discuss their first experiences watching the film, how John McTiernan perfectly cast these roles, and analyze both the strengths and weaknesses of the film.

On this episode of The Video Archives Podcast, Quentin Tarantino and Roger Avary join the colorful eclectic cast of Steven Spielberg's 1941. In the days after the attack on Pearl Harbor, panic grips California as they believe that Japanese officers are everywhere. Turns out, they are! A wayward Japanese military submarine tries to make its way to Hollywood, and as it does, we get to see the stories of manic panic of the day. Join the guys as they discuss Spielberg as a director and his relationship with the ever-erect John Milius, how opinions of the production influenced critiques on the film, and the very important novelization of the movie.

Preview of Kit Carson

On this episode of the Video Archives Podcast Quentin Tarantino & Roger Avary uncover Quentin’s latest obsession: 1936’s The Last of the Mohicans. In this classic tale written by James Fenimore Cooper, two sisters and a British commander are abducted by the Hurons and can only be rescued by the last of the Mohicans. What ensues is a romantic tale of epic proportions set in the midst of the French and Indian War. After giving a brief history lesson on director George B. Seitz, Quentin and Roger discuss exactly what has drawn them to this title, the different iterations they’ve watched, and how Randolph Scott may have won Quentin over. 
 
Then, over on Patreon — we continue the conversation with another film adapted from a classic book: Northwest Passage. Two friends join Rogers’ Rangers during the French and Indian War. Quentin and Roger talk about the history of this film along with the intense brutality of some of the fight sequences. Then, we’re back with director George B. Seitz — but this time, in the Wild West with Kit Carson. Quentin and Roger discuss the action sequences, what it was like viewing this on 16mm, and the delicate balance of the love triangle in this film.

Jules "Unruly Julie" McLean (The New Beverly’s Director of Operations, former Video Archives employee) joins Quentin & Roger in the store this week! First off the shelves, the crimson monster bird Rodan emerges from a volcanic crater to terrorize Tokyo. Quentin breaks down the career of director Ishirō Honda, then Roger and Julie discuss Rodan's amazing practical effects and surprising, tragic ending.
 
Next up, the gang goes undercover in The Quiller Memorandum. After two British SIS agents are murdered at the hands of the Phoenix, Agent Quiller is sent to Berlin to investigate. Quentin, Roger & Julie discuss George Segal's performance as Quiller, the subtext from director Michael Anderson, and the chilling final beat. Finally...wait, there are five other Planet Of The Apes movies?! Your hosts explain the origins of Treachery & Greed On The Planet Of The Apes, learn why General Urko has become a regular character in Quentin's home, and ultimately decide: ape good, human bad!
