"10 Janpath is once again in the news. The residence of Sonia Gandhi, the Congress President is at the centre of attention for the last few days. Reason? the frequent meetings with Poll strategist Prashant Kishor. After handling the political campaigns of different parties, in most of the cases ensuring success, Political strategist Prashant Kishor now wants to work with th grand old party of the Country- the Congress. It is important to note here that previously, Kishore had worked with the Congress and SP alliance in 2017 UP election for the campaign called UP Ke Ladke. The campaign projected Rahul Gandhi and Akhilesh Yadav as the face. However, the campaign did not work and the BJP swept the state. The Saffron surge swept away most of the seats held by both the parties. After that, Prashant Kishor and Congress did not directly work together. When Capt Amarinder Singh was Punjab CM, he did hire the services of Prashant Kishor, but that was limited role. In the past few years, in fact since 2014, Prashant Kishor has worked with several parties including, BJP in 2014 campaign for Modi, JDU in Bihar, AAP in Delhi, DMK in Tamil Nadu, Shiv Sena in Maharashtra and TMC In West Bengal. He also had a short stint as a politician in Nitish Kumar's JDU. But after his disagreement with Kumar over CAA and NRC issue, he was expelled from the party for indiscipline. However, even after that, he continued to work as a political strategist delivering several successful campaigns. It is said that Prashant Kishore wanted to work for Congress for a long time. Reportedly, it was he who first approached Congress showing a willingness to work with the party for 2024. The Gandhi siblings also in the past held talks with him but the talks did not go through. After the bitter fallout, Prashant Kishore had also openly criticized the party. However, after Congress' route in the recent state assembly elections, Prashant Kishor approached the party again and this time the meeting was held not only with the Gandhis but also with senior Congress members. Multiple rounds of meetings have already been held in the past few days. Party's communication head Randeep Singh Surjewala said that the party will announce the decision in 1-2 days. But the speculations are rife about what happened in the meeting between Gandhis, Congress leaders and Prashant Kishor? targeting the BJP-led Union government over the demolition drive in Delhi, veteran Marxist leader and Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan asked whether India's 101st rank in the recent Global Hunger Index can be "erased with bulldozers?" The CM was referring to the Global Hunger Index (GHI) 2021, released last October, which placed the country in an alarming 101st position. In a tweet in both English and Hindi, Vijayan also criticised the reported covering up of slums in Gujarat using curtains ahead of British Prime Minister Boris Johnson's visit to the western state. The stunt was an obvious reprisal for a similar threat by an MP-MLA couple in Maharashtra for Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray over the weekend. Fahmida Hassan Khan said she wanted to read the Namaz, Hanuman Chalisa, Durga Chalisa, Namokar Mantra and more outside PM Modi's official residence at Delhi's Lok Kalyan Marg.

Bombay HC Refuses To Quash FIR Against Ranas

"The Mainstream news media in India has always been criticized for its coverage of events. Switch on a Television news channel today, and you will be greeted with some Provocative, cringy, at times misleading headlines. In a race to become number 1, which surprisingly everyone is on their channel, objectionable graphics and hashtags are run. On top of that there are noisy debates served to the viewer peppered with shrill voices of the anchors and panelists fighting with each other. Sometimes, even beating each other up. There situation is no different as far as ground reports are concerned. There is a new form of dancing reporting which has been cintroduced to the viewer where the reporter on the ground does jumping and other physical stunts while presenting information. In the past the news channels have received wider criticism from the civil society for lack of ethics in presenting news, especially when it comes to sensitive topics. Some news channels have also earned the tag of Godi Media for this. But so far this criticism was from people, society, media watchdogs or opposition. But the situation has turned so bad that even the Modi govt has issued a strongly worded advisory to satellite news channels, that is, electronic media asking them to stop using “unparliamentary language”, “making false claims” and “misquoting agencies” in their news coverage. The advisory issued by the I&B ministry said that some news channels have been ""making false claims"", using ""scandalous headlines"", and offering ""fabricated and hyperbolic statements intending to incite audiences"". Well, if anything one thing must be highlighted that even the Modi govt acknowledged that sometimes what is being served as news on TV channels intends to incite audiences. I&B Ministry Advisory Warns TV News Media Over "Provocative, Misleading" Coverage Over Jahangirpuri

"Navneet Rana, however, On Monday, wrote a letter to Lok Sabha speaker Om Birla alleging torture following her arrest. She alleged that she was abused because of her caste. In the letter, Rana alleged that she made repeated demands for drinking water throughout the night. However, no drinking water was provided. She says To her shock and disbelief, the police staff present told her that she belongs to Schedule Caste and hence they will not give her water in the same glass."" She said that the treatment meted out to her in the lock-up of the Khar Police Station was worse than what animals are treated,"" she said. She also demanded the strictest action to be taken against the Commissioner, Mumbai Police, concerned Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP), concerned Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) and the police staff. However, Mumbai Police commissioner Sanjay Pandey today released a video on his Twitter Showing the Rana couple in the custody. In the video, Ranas can be seen having tea in the Khar Police Station. He posted the video with a caption that read, ""Do we say anything more?"" The video has raised questions on Navneet Ranas allegation of ill treatment by police. Meanwhile, Shivsena has been saying that the ranas are prompted by the BJP and are trying to defame Mumbai police. The Ranas are likely to challenge the Bombay HC decision in SC soon.

"Its just April but the rising temperatures induced by global warming are at unprecedented levels. The heat this year is breaking all the previous records. The soaring mercury is making it impossible to step out of the house after 10 AM in the morning. According to the weather department, India recorded the hottest march this year in the last 122 years. The last time India witnessed mArch as hot as this it was 1901. If March was hottest and driest, April was sizzling. But if you think the month of May will bring any respite, you are in for some bad news. Currently, India is experience severe heatwave in many parts of the country and they are only going to get worse. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has noted that, the heatwave conditions are all set to return in the central and northwest regions of India, this week. The temperature during the daytime in places like Gujarat, Haryana, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Bihar and Odisha is set to rise gradually by 2 to 3 degrees and would prevail till April 28. The maximum temperature will range between 40 to 42 degrees Celsius during the weekend and the heat has already set in over Kutch-Saurashtra. On Sunday, some of the country’s hottest areas were in the northwest regions. The maximum temperature (in degrees Celsius) recorded in Barmer-Rajasthan was 42.7 degrees, Kanpur in UP was 42.6 degrees, Banda in Uttar Pradesh was 44 degrees, while Gurgaon and Delhi recorded 41.4 degrees Celsius each. In Delhi, the mercury is likely to touch the 44-degree mark by Thursday. Delhi has recorded eight heatwave days in April this year which is the maximum since the 11 such days that were witnessed in the month of 2010. As I said, in such a heat it has become difficult for people to work outside. However, those who two square meal depends upon the daily wage are finding it difficult to cope with the extreme weather condition. Arti Ghargi explains.

Killer Heat: What's Behind India's Unprecedented Heatwave In March-April???

"Amid the rising cases of hate crimes and hate speeches across the country, As many as 100 bureaucrats have written an Open letter to PM Modi to speak up. The letter seeks to draw PM Modi's attention to the recent cases of communal violence in various parts of the country and requested him to call for an end to the 'politics of hate'. "Your Silence Is Deafening": 108 Former Bureaucrats Write An Open Letter To PM Modi Over Hate Crimes

"Gujarat Independent MLA Jignesh Mevani who was arrested by Assam Police was granted bail yesterday. He got the bail at a court in Assam’s Barpeta district. Mevani was arrested from Palanpur in Gujarat by a team of Assam Police officials in connection with a case registered against him for his tweets asking PM Modi to appeal for peace. That's quite ironic. People are getting cases against them for asking the leader of the country to appeal for peace. Well, he did receive bail from a Kokrajhar court. But, within a few hours of getting bail, he was re-arrested by Assam Police. What was the charge? that Jignesh Mevani allegedly assaulted a female police official. This case was filed in Barpeta districts on a complaint by a woman police officer who accused him of “assaulting” her and “outraging her modesty”. The court yesterday granted him bail, but it did have some questions for the police. And in fact, the court pulled up the state police saying that they filed a ""False FIR"" and for “abusing the process of the court and the law”. Not only that, the court went a step further and warned the police against “converting our hard-earned democracy into a police state”. Tamil Nadu Finance Minister Palanivel Thiaga Rajan said the Union government’s taxes “continue to be exorbitant” and that “it is neither fair nor feasible for the state government to further reduce taxes.” A statement issued by Rajan late on Wednesday, in response to Prime Minister Narendra Modi criticising states including Tamil Nadu for not reducing taxes on fuel, said the “sole, simple, and fair approach to improve the situation for all, is for the Union government to remove the levy of cesses and surcharges and revert to rates that prevailed in 2014.” This and more in today's South Connect.
