#1 The first impression we have of sacred Silence is often in the grandeur of nature. It happens spontaneously when the mind goes quiet in the endless emptiness of the desert, at the beach as the sun sinks below the horizon, or when hiking in the mountains and coming upon a giant, ancient sequoia.

#2 I was eight years old when I lived on an island for three years. I spent hours exploring the beach, climbing on large rocks, and swimming in the open ocean. One afternoon, I was fishing at the seaside with a new pole my parents had given me for my birthday. I felt a tug on the line, and began reeling in what looked like a rockfish. Its sleek, reddish-orange body glistened in the sunlight.

#3 The Silence that pervades the universe and from which all creation arises is the unseen substance of all existence, as well as its foundation. It is the oneness that underlies everything, and it is what allows us to see what is in the way.
