The Colonial Records of the State of Georgia document the colony through its first twenty-five years and includes correspondence between Georgia founder James Oglethorpe and the Trustees for Establishing the Colony, as well as records pertaining to land grants; agreements and interactions with Indigenous peoples; the settlement of a small Jewish community and the Salzburgers, German-speaking Protestant refugees; and the removal of restrictions on land tenure, rum, and slavery in the colony.

Most of the local records of colonial Georgia were destroyed during the Revolution. Under Governor James Wright’s direction, merchant John Graham loaded much of the official records on his vessel in the Savannah River. During the Battle of the Rice Boats in March 1776, the Inverness was burned while it lay at anchor. The destructive civil war that occurred in the latter phases of the Revolution resulted in further destruction. The Colonial Records of the State of Georgia, drawn from archival material in Great Britain, remain a unique source.

Volume 27, spanning the years 1754–56, contains the papers of Georgia’s first governor, John Reynolds, as well as the correspondence of various inhabitants.

Old Petersburg and the Broad River Valley of Georgia: Their Rise and Decline

The American Revolution in Georgia explores the political, economic, and social impacts of the American Revolution throughout the state of Georgia. In this detailed historical study, Kenneth Coleman describes the events leading up to the Revolution, the fighting years of war, and the years of readjustment after independence became a reality for the United States. Coleman investigates how these events impacted Georgia’s history forever, from the rise of discontent between 1764 and 1774 to the fighting after the siege in Savannah between 1779 and 1782 and changes in interstate affairs between 1782 to 1789, and more. The American Revolution in Georgia contributes to the complicated history of the American Revolution and its impacts on the South.

The American Revolution in Georgia, 1763–1789

The Houstouns of Georgia shares the history of one of the oldest families in Georgia, showcasing its influential members and reflecting on the effect of one family throughout the state's history. Established by Sir Patrick Houstoun, who accompanied James Oglethorpe and helped him lay the foundations of the colony, the Houstoun family has called Georgia home since its inception. Over two hundred years after its founding, the author of The Houstouns of Georgia traces her own lineage back to the Houstoun family in her heavily researched account of the family’s presence in Georgia from its founding onward.

The Houstouns of Georgia

Richard Beale Davis

A Colonial Southern Bookshelf studies popular books among southern readers in eighteenth-century America. From booksellers’ lists and sale catalogs, Richard Beale Davis’s study focuses on three key groups of literature: books in law, politics, and history; books on religious topics; and belles lettres. His examination of the colonial southern library suggests many revealing conclusions: persons of many social and economic levels owned and read books; literacy was more widespread than many historians have perceived; the vast majority of the books in southern libraries were published in England and Europe; and colonial newspapers constituted an important influence on cultural tastes. A Colonial Southern Bookshelf takes a historical look at the popular reading lists of the time and what they say about society in eighteenth-century America.

A Colonial Southern Bookshelf: Reading in the Eighteenth Century

Georgia’s Charter of 1732, originally published in 1942, is a scholar’s guide to the charter. The full text of the Georgia Charter of 1732 is reproduced in the book alongside the Albert B. Saye’s account of the events leading up to the granting of the charter. This essential moment at the very beginning of Georgia’s history is better understood through Saye’s narrative surrounding the Georgia Charter.

Georgia’s Planting Prelate consists of notes on the life of the Reverend Stephen Elliott, a bishop of the Protestant Episcopal Church in the mid-1800s and the only presiding bishop of the Protestant Episcopal Church in the Confederate States of America. These notes are accompanied by the full text of the bishop’s address on horticulture given in 1851 in Macon, which displays his remarkable knowledge of southern agriculture.
