'John Ames, Native Commissioner' is an enthralling adventure novel penned by Bertram Mitford. The story takes place in the kraal of Madúla, situated in Sikumbutana, where something seems amiss. Unusually, no cattle are being brought in for milking at the regular evening time. In the kraal, six or eight men with head-rings sit gloomily near the chief's hut while the younger men huddle in groups and women remain inside their huts. Uniformed in their rifles and bandoliers, eleven men, including a sergeant and ten Matabele police officers, are present and their purpose is unknown.
