'Body horror meets boarding school in a moving, terrifying thriller' – Guardian
Everyone loses something to the Tox; Hetty lost her eye, Reese's hand has changed, and Byatt just disappeared completely.
It’s been eighteen months since the Raxter School for Girls was put in quarantine. The Tox turned the students strange and savage, the teachers died off one by one. Cut off from the mainland, the girls don’t dare wander past the school’s fence where the Tox has made the woods wild and dangerous. They wait for the cure as the Tox takes; their bodies becoming sick and foreign, things bursting out of them, bits missing.
But when Byatt goes missing, Hetty will do anything to find her best friend, even if it means breaking quarantine and braving the horrors that lie in the wilderness past the fence. As she digs deeper, she learns disturbing truths about her school and what else is living on Raxter Island. And that the cure might not be a cure at all . . .

Well written and well read, but a lot of gore and tear. Mainly it tells of girl’s friendships and focuses beautifully on loyalty and depth, but it also feels to tell in a symbolical way of how it f e e l s to grow up and mature as a girl, albeit in sci-fi and horror symbols. That period of life when it can feel the whole world suddenly shifts and isolates you from what you had, those defining years when you realise you are locked in as well as chased of patriarchal forces. Those days of life when you also see that so many sisters bend their loyalty to others than their likes to gain power or illusionary escape, all those moments of learning, betrayal and how to find trust in the most closest women around you.I wish I’d known though about all the morbid details and gory horror before starting the listen, I know I’d enjoyed it better if prepared for that.

A good read, though it feels like the ideas and emotions in it are only half-baked, the author too-afraid to dive deep into things. It’s fine to let your readers connect the dots but too many plot threads are left completely hanging while others are tied just a bit too neatly. And yeah, nothing of the summary or title makes you ready foe the level of body-horror or amounts of mass death. So, better warnings bwfoew books, please?
