Was it the best horror story (in terms of plots) I have ever read? Probably not, but still I really really enjoyed reading it. It is scary and creepy and if you are someone who likes reading in bed after turning the lights off for the night, be prepared for staying at least an hour awake after closing the book convincing yourself, "it is just a book, it is not real, it is just a book". But apart from the scary bits it also had jokes and camaraderie, which was something which was unexpected for me, considering most books of the horror genre are generally entirely somber excluding a few errant sentences maybe, but The Haunting of the Hill House had quite a few moments of friendship and funny conversations. I personally have a love/hate relationship with ambiguity in books, but this is one of the examples of ambiguity done well (acc. to my taste), it made me think for quite some time after I had turned the very last page but it didn't make me flunk the book across room.

The narration was fantastic but it wasn't that scary. It was a fun-scary one, meaning it was atmospheric and the writing made it spooky. I enjoyed it.
