Revisiting another classic show from 2021, and asking has the ‘sea of faith’ ebbed for good, and what might replace it—new atheism, ‘woke’ moralism, or a rediscovery of Christianity’s story? Douglas Murray and N.T. Wright discuss identity, myth and meaning in a post-Christian West. Murray, an “uncomfortable agnostic,” values the Christian inheritance yet laments a church that echoes the culture rather than proclaiming forgiveness and hope. Wright argues that the Christian narrative—based in history and centred on Jesus’ crucifixion and resurrection—uniquely grounds human dignity, justice and reconciliation, offering more than social activism or abstract ethics. Together they probe truth, myth, miracles, the pandemic’s disorientation, and whether we can still find a story to live by. In this show from Aug 2011 we met Rebekah Bennetch who lives in Saskatoon, Canada. She grew up in a strong Christian family. But in 2007 "came out" as an atheist. Sheridan Voysey is a writer, speaker and broadcaster on contemporary spirituality. They discussed what led Rebekah to abandon her faith, how Christians can best treat their "apostate" friends and family, and what lessons can be learnt for fruitful dialogue between believers and atheists.
