Where that book broke a puppy to the gun, this one builds the kennel behind it: forming a retriever kennel and choosing its inmates, the brood bitch, the sire, the precautions before pupping and what to do when the puppies arrive, dew-claws, winter-bred litters, exercise, education and walks, kennel manners, the bitch in season, and the practicalities of sending dogs by rail.

Cooke's Riverside dogs dominated the breed between the wars, and this is the working method behind them, set down without a wasted word.
