Abraham: Ahnvater – Vorbild – Kultstifter

Gottes Hand weist Abraham auf die unzählbare Menge der Sterne. So zahlreich sollen seine Nachkommen werden. Damals kaum zu glauben, aber heute unübersehbar: Drei Weltreligionen nehmen Abraham in Anspruch. Als Ahnvater Israels steht er an der Wiege des Judentums. Von Paulus bis heute haben die Christen an seinem Vorbild gelernt, was glauben heißt. Im Islam gilt er als vollkommener Muslim, der sich rückhaltlos in Gottes Willen ergeben hat. Im Gedenken an ihn und sein Opfer begeht man die jährliche Pilgerfahrt mit ihren Riten. Auf ihn als Kultstifter führt man den Bau des Heiligtums in Mekka zurück. Sie fielen nicht vom Himmel, sondern entstanden zu verschiedenen Zeiten. Matthias Köckerts höchst lesenswertes und flüssig geschriebenes Buch leitet dazu an, ihre literarische Schönheit zu entdecken, sie aus ihrer je eigenen geschichtlichen Stunde zu verstehen und ihre gewaltige Wirkung zu würdigen.

Hard to believe then, but obvious today: Three world religions make a claim on Abraham. As Israel's forefather he stands at the cradle of Judaism. His example taught Christians from the time of Paulus until nowadays what it means to believe. The Islam considers him the perfect Muslim, who devoted himself completely to God's will. To commemorate him and his sacrifices people exercise annual pilgrimages. To him as a cultural patron it is said we owe the sacred site of Mekka. These different interpretations are based on Mose 12-25 about Abraham and Sara. Those texts are real gems. They did not fall from heaven, but were created in different times. Matthias Köckert's book is worth reading and guides us to discover the literary beauty of them, to understand them in their own historical time frame and to appreciate their massive influence.
