Henry Childs Merwin (1853-1929) was a Boston lawyer, a biographer of Jefferson and Burr, and a regular contributor to The Atlantic, where Dogs and Men first appeared in 1910. It is not a manual and has nothing to say about breeding or breed points. It is a reflection on character, loyalty and moral obligation, built around five dogs Merwin knew: Pedro, Carus, Don, Sylvan Roamer and Toby.
