Islamic Renaissance - The Real Task Ahead

In 1967, a young Pakistani scholar published a monograph in the editorial pages of a monthly journal that would become, in Dr. Israr Ahmad's own later estimation, the founding manifesto of a movement. Islamic Renaissance: The Real Task Ahead is that monograph, presented here in a careful English translation by Dr. Absar Ahmad.

Israr Ahmad's argument runs against the grain of the twentieth century's most influential Islamic revivalist currents. Where movements such as Jama'at-e-Islami and Al-Ikhwan Al-Muslimoon defined Islam chiefly as a comprehensive "system of life"—a socio-political and economic programme to be implemented through the machinery of the state—Ahmad contends that this very framing was itself a symptom of the disease it claimed to cure. The monograph traces this diagnosis through the historical sequence of Western intellectual and political ascendancy: the displacement of metaphysical and transcendental concepts by physical science, the political and military subjugation of the Muslim world, the two defensive responses that followed—withdrawal into private piety on one hand, apologetic modernism on the other—and finally the twentieth-century revivalist movements that Ahmad regards as having addressed the symptoms of Muslim decline while leaving its root cause, a hollowed-out Iman, untouched.

His proposed remedy is neither political agitation nor renewed legal codification but a sustained, rigorous academic movement: one capable of engaging Western philosophy on its own intellectual terrain, retrieving the metaphysical seriousness of classical Kalam, and forming a cadre of scholars whose faith is reasoned, examined, and inwardly lived rather than merely inherited. The monograph closes with a concrete institutional proposal—the establishment of a Qur'an Academy—that Ahmad would go on to pursue through the founding of Markazi Anjuman Khuddam-ul-Qur'an in Lahore.

Written with the polemical clarity and structural precision that would come to characterize Ahmad's later work, this short text remains a foundational statement of his thought and a significant primary document for understanding the internal debates of twentieth-century Islamic revivalism—debates whose terms continue to shape discussions of Islamic renewal today.
