Marianela

"Marianela" is a novel written by the renowned Spanish author Benito Pérez Galdós. Published in 1878, the work is considered one of the most notable examples of 19th-century Spanish realism. The story unfolds in a rural setting in Spain and revolves around the young protagonist, Marianela. She is a girl of unfavourable appearance but possesses a noble heart and a strong spirit. Marianela has been blind since birth and serves as the companion to Pablo, a young man who is also blind from birth but belongs to the upper class and possesses physical attractiveness. As the story progresses, Marianela develops deep feelings of love for Pablo, despite their differences in social class and physical appearance. Pablo's newfound physical beauty reveals his vanity and shallowness, leaving Marianela devastated and confronted with the harsh reality of her place in society. "Marianela" explores themes such as beauty, physical appearance, love, social inequality, and the internal conflicts of the characters. Galdós utilizes realism in his prose to vividly portray the lives and emotions of the characters while reflecting on society and the human condition. "Marianela" is a poignant story with a profound message that remains relevant to this day.
