Marriage & Freedom

This manual was born out of twenty-five years of our own marriage, years of counseling couples, and fifteen years of walking alongside them in marriage conferences. We have watched God restore marriages that felt beyond repair and breathe new life into good marriages that had quietly settled for less. We believe the best is still ahead for your marriage.

We want you to know—we didn't start here. Our first years of marriage looked nothing like what we expected. If you'd watched us on a Saturday a few years in, you would have seen something closer to a National Geographic special—two bighorn rams on a hillside, head to head, fighting for hours.

But God didn't leave us there. Over time, He began to show us something that changed everything. Instead of locking horns, we needed to lock arms against the real enemy. God was showing us that our spouse is a tool in His hand to bring about our own sanctification and restoration. That realization humbled us both. Here's something nobody tells you at the altar: the person you will forgive most in your life is your spouse. You just can't grow tired of it. We saw each other at our ugliest: stubborn, defensive, and afraid. But we began to see each other not as the problem, but as a gift. We've learned to speak life over failure instead of accusation. And when tempers flare, we ask, “God, what are you trying to heal in us?" rather than staying in the cycle of blame.

That's what this manual is about. Not a perfect marriage— we still don't have one of those. But a much freer marriage. One where the wounds get healed instead of buried, where forgiveness flows instead of bitterness, and where two people stop fighting each other and start fighting together against the real enemy. That marriage is available to you in Christ. It's never too late to start: His mercies are new every morning.

God's plan for your marriage is abundance and joy. He created marriage as a gift that should only get better with time. Yet many couples, if they're honest, would say their marriage isn't all they imagined it would be. The closeness they once felt has given way to distance. Conversations that used to flow now circle the same old conflicts. Somewhere along the way, the abundant life God promised began to feel like survival mode. Think of God's design for your marriage as a river: powerful, life-giving, meant to flow with abundance and purpose. That river never dries up. But for most couples, it becomes fully or partially blocked. Unhealed wounds from your past. Patterns of self-protection you've carried since childhood. Fear, unforgiveness, and passivity, just to name a few. The water is still there, but it's barely moving. Freedom in marriage is the process of removing blockages so that God's original design can flow unhindered through your repaltionship.
