Novela negra
Theodore Francis Powys was born on the 20th December 1875, in Shirley, Derbyshire, England.
Powys was born into a famously gifted literary family and initially attempted a career in farming before abandoning it in 1901 to dedicate his life entirely to writing and contemplation.
He settled in the secluded village of Chaldon Herring in Dorset, a landscape that deeply influenced his dark, distinctive fictional world. His writing style is uniquely characterised by a blend of rustic Dorset dialect, biblical prose, and grim, ironic humour. Unlike traditional pastoral writers, he viewed rural life through a lens of theological struggle, exploring themes of human cruelty, sexuality, and the omnipresence of death. His most celebrated work, Mr. Weston's Good Wine (1927), serves as an allegory where God visits a Dorset village disguised as a wine merchant. He withdrew from writing in the late 1930s, spending his remaining years in quiet retirement.
Theodore Francis Powys died on the 27th November 1953 in Sturminster Newton, Dorset. He was 77.
