“Grandma!” Josie hurried across the yard to hug her grandmother tightly and pull her away from the burning house.

“I’m fine, ” the older woman said. “Just a little kitchen fire, that’s all. ”

“Still, ” Josie pulled her to the curb, watching the firefighters work for a moment before turning her attention back to her grandmother and brushing hair out of her eyes. “What happened?”

“It was the oven. You know I’ve been saying I need to get it replaced, ” she sighed and leaned on her granddaughter.

“The important thing is that you’re fine. ” She kissed the top of the older woman’s head.

One of the firefighters came up to them and removed his helmet. He had dark hair, deep brown eyes, and an air of confidence and strength. “Are you okay, ma’am?”
