#1 I lie on my side and watch as the sun rises. I had a hard time sleeping last night, and was still skeptical about how hard Simon had slept, if at all. I was also skeptical about how easy it was for Simon to get free doses of drugs from street dealers.

#2 I pull Simon’s body into a standing position, and as I do, I realize that his wallet is missing. I look around, trying to figure out what happened. I can’t believe what I’ve become.

#3 I was called to the scene of a drug overdose. I knew how dangerous opioids were, and I knew the boy who died was my friend’s supplier. I knew I could get in trouble for helping him, but I had to. I couldn’t leave him there alone.

# I am given a police report number and a card with a name and number to call for a follow-up within a few days. I am free to go, but the medical examiner warns me not to take this the wrong way. He hopes he never sees me again.
