The Belle's Stratagem (Annotated): Enriched Edition. A Georgian Comedy of Manners About Romantic Intrigue, Marriage Market Satire, and Women's Independence

Hannah Cowley's The Belle's Stratagem (1780) is a lively comedy of manners in which Letitia Hardy, confronted with an arranged marriage to the seemingly cold Doricourt, devises an ingenious plan to win both his affection and her freedom within the constraints of fashionable society. Combining sparkling repartee, mistaken impressions, masquerade, theatrical disguise, and scenes of emotional revelation, the play revises conventions inherited from Restoration comedy while participating in the eighteenth-century movement toward sentimental and "laughing" comedy. Its wit exposes the absurdities of courtship, gendered education, and aristocratic reputation, even as its marriage plot negotiates the period's competing ideals of romantic choice and social duty. The contrast between urban sophistication and provincial simplicity further gives Cowley a broad, theatrically effective social canvas. A prominent woman dramatist of the late eighteenth century, Cowley wrote at a time when professional female authorship remained both possible and precarious. Her experience of the London theatrical world, her interest in women's intellectual and emotional agency, and her engagement with contemporary debates about marriage and sociability inform the play's unusually resourceful heroine. Cowley's craftsmanship lies in making critique pleasurable: Letitia's strategy is at once a comic device and a pointed commentary on the limited means available to women seeking autonomy. This edition is especially rewarding for readers interested in women's writing, eighteenth-century theater, comedy, and the history of marriage. The Belle's Stratagem offers accessible theatrical energy alongside sophisticated reflections on performance, identity, and power, making it valuable both as an entertaining stage comedy and as a significant document of Georgian cultural life.
