Lily has been promised in marriage by her parents to the Laird of Loneshire, a man of vast wealth, whose first wife died under mysterious circumstances. She travels to Loneshire, her new home, escorted by the Laird's brother, Douglas, who she finds rude and arrogant. But as they travel on their long journey, feelings arise on both sides.
