The Yellow Wallpaper

This audiobook is narrated by an AI Voice. A young woman is brought to a rented colonial mansion for the summer to recover from what her husband, a physician, calls a temporary nervous depression. His prescription is rest: no work, no visitors, and above all no writing. She keeps a secret journal anyway.

Her room at the top of the house was once a nursery. It has barred windows, a bed nailed to the floor, and hideous yellow wallpaper that she is not allowed to have changed. With nothing else to occupy her, she begins to study the pattern.

There is a sub-pattern behind the front design. It only shows in certain lights. And after a while she becomes certain that there is a woman behind it, creeping, shaking the bars, trying to get out.

First published in 1892, Charlotte Perkins Gilman's story was drawn from her own experience of the rest cure and is now one of the most widely taught works of American literature: a landmark of feminist writing and one of the great psychological horror stories in English. This unabridged audiobook edition presents the complete original text.
