Travelling Light

When war breaks out and mobilization is announced, a top Moscow corporate-security expert, a man who spent his career shielding companies from fraud, raiders, and corrupt officials, leaves the country with a single suitcase. He promises his wife and children he'll be back in a week or two. Three months later he is smoking on the balcony of a freezing Turkish rental, watching his old life fall silent one unanswered call at a time.

The new émigré world has little use for a man with his skills and a toxic passport. But the homeland he fled has not forgotten him. In Lisbon, an offer arrives that is too generous to be honest: a consulting contract in Guyana, assessing a Russian-owned gold-mining company that is about to change hands.

Deep in the South American jungle, among illegal gold pits, armed patrols, bribed police, and former security men turned freebooters, he learns the truth. The company is being sold for one dollar, and the real price is the freedom of a man imprisoned in Russia on a fabricated case. With Russian intelligence on one side and a suspiciously well-informed "geologist" from a Canadian rival on the other, he must decide whose game he is playing, what a stranger's life is worth, and whether there is any road back to the family he left behind.

Travelling Light is a taut adventure thriller and a portrait of a generation of Russians uprooted by war: people who lost their homes, their friends, and their certainties, and set out to discover who they are when everything else is gone. Blackmail and double-crosses, machetes and assault rifles, rum, diamonds, and gold. And beneath it all, a man trying to stay human.
