Variety Patter

Variety Patter is a witty, highly observational essay-sketch that dives directly into the booming world of Victorian music halls and the theater.

"Patter" refers to the fast-paced, rhythmic comedic talk used by music-hall entertainers, and Jerome uses this text to brilliantly dissect the tropes, archetypes, and backstage realities of late-19th-century variety shows. Having spent his early years as a struggling traveling actor himself, Jerome writes with an authentic, inside perspective, mocking the cliched acts, the demanding audiences, and the absurdity of the entertainment industry with his trademark dry irony.

Originally published in The Idler magazine in 1892 and later collected in John Ingerfield, and Other Stories) this text is an absolute treasure trove for anyone fascinated by the history of performing arts, showing Jerome K. Jerome at his sharpest as a cultural critic.
