Gunny Mac, Navy Cross recipient for his bravery on Bloody Ridge, becomes one thing he hated his whole life, a civilian, and must adjust not serving his Marines. He buys a three-dollar book and becomes a private eye.

Gunny Wojohowitz...Mac's best friend needs Mac to help him find the one man he needs to kill.

Lt. Burke...a Naval officer and spoiled blue-blood Harvard graduate, sent to the Marine Corps as punishment, needs Mac to search for redemption.

Lt. McCaffey, Padre of the First Marine Battalion on Guadalcanal and Navy Cross recipient, is not the same Jesuit priest after his head wound. He empties the Naval hospital's psych unit with hilarious results to protect his friend Gunny Mac.
