The first novel in Julia Quinn's worldwide bestselling Bridgerton novels, now a series created by Shonda Rhimes for Netflix. This is the story of Daphne Bridgerton and the Duke: welcome to the ballrooms of Regency London . . . Can there be any greater challenge to London's Ambitious Mamas than an unmarried duke? Lady Whistledown's Society Papers, April 1813 By all accounts, Simon Basset is on the verge of proposing to his best friend's sister, the lovely - and almost-on-the-shelf - Daphne Bridgerton. But the two of them know the truth - it's all an elaborate plan to keep Simon free from marriage-minded society mothers. And as for Daphne, surely she will attract some worthy suitors now that it seems a duke has declared her desirable . . . Their ruse works like a charm - at first. But as Daphne waltzes across ballroom after ballroom with Simon, it's hard to remember that their courtship is a complete sham. Maybe it's his devilish smile, certainly it's the way his eyes seem to burn every time he looks at her. It wasn't the plan, but it seems she's falling for the duke, for real. And amidst the glittering, gossipy, cut-throat world of London's elite, there is only one certainty: love ignores every rule . . . tw // rape Although I liked the book overall, there’s a scene where Daphne basically rapes Simon and it’s incredibly horrifying. I’m curious for the other books but I’m definitely not comfortable with the author basically romanticising what Daphne did. Overall the show is better. Book Daphne is better I guess but I honestly dislike her HEAVILY after that scene either way. It was even worse than in the show. Simon was kind of bland too. Without “that” scene, I’d have given this book 3,5 stars but I just can’t look past it. I’ve heard the other books are better though.

TW - RapeAs someone has said before, the book overall is enjoyable. However, I cannot overlook the scene where Daphne basically rapes Simon and the author (and Daphne) romanticise it. It shook me to my core and I feel like it should have had a TW at the beginning, at least.

Leuk. Beetje saucy Pride & Prejudice. De auteur heeft zich laten inspireren door Darcy en Elizabeth, maar geeft hier haar hedendaagse draai aan.

Definitely deserves a Trigger Warning for the rape scene in the book. It made me rather nauseous the way the author romanticised such an event and then pursued to make the victim into a monster. Also, do not listen to the second epilogue if you do not wish spoilers for either the series or the books.

Ok, this is confusing. I did not watch the series so am wholly unbiased on that front. But apart from the rape scene someone already mentioned, I had other issues, too: Although it is a cool idea to write some kind of Jane Austen fan fiction that fills in all the sexual fantasies going on in the young people's heads, the story does not quite know how "Regency" it still wants to be. Daphne, for instance, is depicted as a virgin who allegedly does not know what the sexual act is, but she confidently engages in steamy innuendo. This makes the bed room talk with her mother before her marriage a farce although that scene could have been a real gem. I don't mind anachronisms, but they need to be consistent. My greatest problem, however, is with the Duke. I think he is meant to be a comically tragic character, but I found him obnoxious. The best characters were actually Daphne's brothers. Vividly written novel with some nice puns, but not quite up there with the true classics.
