I could see it was written by a woman. All male protagonists say “i am sorry” every other page. I finished it, but got irritated towards the end. All this extremely rich, extremely successful people, seems a wishful thinking of the author. I didn’t like it, although i liked the first half. I wouldn’t give it a Booker. I am sorry ;)

Meest waanzinnige verhaal in tijden.. diep geraakt en prachtig gebracht.

Only recommended to disaster tourists and sadomasochists.The prose is well written, but also rather unbelievable. A traumatized protagonist with severe mental health problems somehow has an excellent career as a lawyer. His friendships are based on nothing but "Goddammit Jude" and "I'm sorry". It's all loose sand - everything is a facade for displaying the beautiful tragedy porn.

What remains constant through Yanagihara’s achingly beautiful narrative, however, is the self-torture Jude inflicts upon himself; the worthlessness and shame he feels; and the unbroken desire to end his life.The novel’s characters – the central four protagonists and beyond – are so gracefully imagined that it’s impossible not to be heavily invested in each and every one of their lives, and by the time I turned the final page, I felt like a little part of me was gone, never to be replaced again. The prose is achingly alive; the two timeframes expertly interlaced, and there is little question over the prowess of Yanagihara as an astonishing storytelle

Heel goed geschreven boek en heel prettig voorgelezen, maar moeilijk om te luisteren. Een zeer verdrietig verhaal.

Het is long ago that a book provoked such an emotional response in me. I don’t remember crying about what I read, but this time I did.

Hartverscheurend verhaal, ongelofelijk mooi geschreven. Een van de beste boeken die mij ooit aangeraden is.

Begint oersaai, gaat over in torture p**n en wordt dan mega verdrietig. Maar ook irritant. Maar “what was the reason?” Zoals hedendaags virtuoos Cardi B ooit zei. Eigenlijk een soort 50 shades of Twilight maar dan pretentieus omdat het over zogenaamde intellectuelen in New York gaat.
