The Emperor needs necromancers. The Ninth Necromancer needs a swordswoman. Gideon has a sword, some dirty magazines, and no more time for undead nonsense. Tamsyn Muir's Gideon the Ninth unveils a solar system of swordplay, cut-throat politics, and lesbian necromancers. Her characters leap off the page, as skillfully animated as arcane revenants. The result is a heart-pounding epic science fantasy. Brought up by unfriendly, ossifying nuns, ancient retainers, and countless skeletons, Gideon is ready to abandon a life of servitude and an afterlife as a reanimated corpse. She packs up her sword, her shoes, and her dirty magazines, and prepares to launch her daring escape. But her childhood nemesis won't set her free without a service. Harrowhark Nonagesimus, Reverend Daughter of the Ninth House and bone witch extraordinaire, has been summoned into action. The Emperor has invited the heirs to each of his loyal Houses to a deadly trial of wits and skill. If Harrowhark succeeds she will be become an immortal, all-powerful servant of the Resurrection, but no necromancer can ascend without their cavalier. Without Gideon's sword, Harrow will fail, and the Ninth House will die. Of course, some things are better left dead.

Tamsyn Muir writes interesting and believable characters, giving all the information you need about these characters and the world they live in without ever having to spell it out for you.And what a world it is. A weird amalgamation of science fiction, fantasy, horror and murder mystery, inhabited by characters both bold and demure, rash and thoughtful, gentle and abrasive. The reader, Moira Quirk, also does an excellent job on top of all this to breathe even more life into the world of necromancers. Her excellent performance adds a ton of extra character to the people. This being an audiobook, I did miss being able to lead back to the beginning where the dramatis personae are noted down on occasion, but with the naming conventions and the excellent choice work of the reader, that only took a while for me to get all the characters straight. In absence of the next book being available at the time of this writing, I will just have to listen to this one again.

Lesbian necromancers in space, what more could you want?

Nobody ever pitched this to me as a certain genre I love, but in hindsight that entirely makes sense since it’s neither The Point per se and the main character is fairly oblivious to it. I was also pleasantly surprised that this book wasn’t as “medical torture porn” as two fans had led me to believe—far from it! I’d call the back half of the novel “anime-esque”, with how it ramps up and characters progress.

Sometimes a bit confusing but overall super funny, weird, deranged and filled with necromancers

3-3.5 I wish I read it as a physical book, no idea what was happening at least half of the time://

Bit difficult to follow in the beginning but worth pulling through! I got very invested into characters and the twist and turns kept me guessing until the end.

Hij kwam wat moeilijk op gang maar na het derde uur zat ik er helemaal in. Een verrassend en mooi einde van het eerste boek. Zeker een aanrader.
