In December 1937, one of the most brutal massacres in the long annals of wartime barbarity occurred in the capital of China. The Japanese army swept into Nanking and not only looted and burned the defenseless city but systematically raped, tortured, and murdered half of the city’s remaining population, some 300,000 Chinese civilians. Amazingly, the account of this atrocity was denied by the Japanese government.
The Rape of Nanking tells the story from three perspectives: that of the Japanese soldiers who performed it, that of the Chinese civilians who endured it, and finally, that of a group of Europeans and Americans who refused to abandon the city and were able to create a safety zone that saved almost 300,000 Chinese. Among these was John Rabe, the tireless German leader of the rescue effort, whom Iris Chang called the “Oskar Schindler of China.”

Content warning: every horribly thing you can imagine. Do not read if you can not handle pain or suffering on any level. 5 stars might be unconventional for this type of book but for anyone who is even remotely interested in WW2, you should read this. Anybody who does not handle blood, gore, horror, pain or torture well, DO NOT GO NEAR THIS.

Very very good book. Never heard of the Nanking tragedy before. Shocking. Impressive research translated to a very accesible read. I’m very distraught by Japan’s refusal to take responsibility and denial/whitewashing of the events in Nanking till today. Everybody should read this, or at least be informed!

Eye-opening and infuriating. The book is 22 years old when the Nanking Massacre was not as well-known as it is today (granted, it’s hardly common knowledge right now as well), but it aged well. It’s hard to say I enjoyed reading it, because of the subject matter, but it definitely was engrossing and nauseating. I hope more people pick this up and find out more about this tragic event. If we don’t learn history, we can’t learn from our mistakes.

Incredible, wonderfully researched and well written, it was long overdue for a groundbreaking piece like it to gain attention in the west
