"A Wasted Day" by Richard Harding Davis follows Mr. Thorndike who is considered the wisest man on Wall Street. When he receives a letter from a probation officer, she asks that he come to court as a character witness for Mr. Stark, his former clerk. This summons lasts longer than he expected and as he tries to leave, the judge arrives. At first, he's annoyed that he will waste a day just sitting around. Then the cases become interesting and by the time Stark appears before the judge, Thorndike has a new appreciation of the justice system.
