OpenDevin Engineering: Self‑Hosted Software‑Dev Agents for Private Codebases

"OpenDevin Engineering: Self-Hosted Software-Dev Agents for Private Codebases"

For engineering leaders, platform teams, security architects, and senior developers exploring autonomous software-development agents inside controlled environments, this book offers a rigorous guide to self-hosting OpenDevin—now known as OpenHands—against private repositories. Rather than treating agentic coding as a novelty, it approaches the subject as a serious systems-engineering problem: one involving execution semantics, isolation boundaries, trust, governance, and operational reliability in real enterprise settings.

Across the book, readers will build a precise mental model of how software-dev agents plan, act, observe, and fail; how sandbox architectures shape safety and reproducibility; and how self-hosted deployments differ from managed services in security posture and organizational value. It covers threat modeling, least-privilege design, secrets handling, version-aware configuration, model routing, repository and identity integration, repository-specific customization, observability, evaluation, and staged rollout. The result is a practical framework for designing, deploying, and governing agent systems that can work productively on sensitive internal codebases.

Written for experienced practitioners, the book assumes familiarity with containers, source control, deployment operations, and modern LLM tooling. Its distinguishing strength is depth: it connects platform mechanics to operational decision-making, showing not just how to run the system, but how to run it responsibly at pr
