I Like this genre! Adventure, romance and also the rescue of aristocrats, are the ingrediens in this story withthe elusive Scarlet Pimpernel.Nicely read by Steven Crossley.

Having seen several film and television adaptations of the Scarlet Pimpernel story it was obvious that the treatments must depart from the original significantly since they are very different from one another. I finally decided to check the original out.The story has age to it, but I have read and loved many authors from the 19th and early 20th century. Yet I struggle with this book - I think that is due to the fact that the Baroness Orczy isn’t a very brilliant author.The prose is very wordy indeed, and could give M Dumas a run for his money. The plotting is oddly convoluted. The main points of the Scarlet Pimpernel - he is a master of disguise, and there are thrilling heist like escapades - is only very lightly touched upon. Is there a reason to listen to this book? I suggest two: it is nicely read, and would become a perfect drinking game if you imbibe every time an attractive female body part is described as “childlike”.
