Although based on historical persons from the ninth century, Ragnar Lodbrok and his sons are the subjects of compelling legends dating from the Viking era. Warriors, raiders, and rulers, Ragnar and his sons inspired unknown writers to set down their stories over seven centuries ago. This volume presents new and original translations of the three major Old Norse texts that tell Ragnar’s story: The Saga of Ragnar Lodbrok, The Tale of Ragnar’s Sons, and The Sögubrot. Ragnar’s death song, the “Krákumál,” completes the story. Extensive notes and commentary are provided, helping listeners enter the world of these timeless stories of Viking adventure.

I had preferred to listen to it in Norwegian. It's a real rollercoast trip to try to follow the non-linear traditional story-telling. If you are new to Icelandic or Norwegian sagas, it gives you an idea of how the manuscript authors behind Netflix "Vikings" could end up with such a messy story line, although they also appears to randomly mix up wifes, sons, and to add random kings and jarls from other sagas. You understand the story's different oddities if you imagine a story teller by the fire in a large viking hall trying to keep the audience focused by adding more and more oddities. Probably each generation of story tellers added their own audience-friendly parts. Many of the jokes are lost with the translation. The old scandinavians expelled in word-games.
