يفتتح الصولي كتابه بفصل مهم هو فضل الكتابة، وأهميته تكمن في هذا الإنتقال الذي عرفته الثقافة العربية من الشفاهية إلى الكتابة والتدوين، وفي الإنتقال إلى النثر في ثقافة يشكل الشعر جوهرها وديوانها. بعد ذلك يتوقف الصولي عند ضروب كثيرة من الموضوعات ترتبط بالكتاب، فهو يتحدث عن أول من ألف بالعربية، وعن البسملة، ثم ينتقل كي يتحدث عن الخط، وما قيل في حسنه وقبحه، ليتوقف عند القلم والحبر والقرطاس. ويعود الصولي بعدها ليتحدث عن ترتيب الكتاب وعنوانه وخاتمته وترجمته.
