في هذه الرواية الفريدة في بنائها ومضمونها، يعيد نجيب محفوظ صياغة التاريخ المصري من وجهة نظر مختلفة، حيث يجمع الحُكًام المصريين منذ عهد «مينا» موحد القُطْرَين وصولًا لعصر «السادات»، فيُجري بينهم حوارًا طويلًا في صورة محاكمة تستدعي كلًّا منهم للوقوف أمامها. يستلهم محفوظ فكرة المحاكمة من أسطورة مصرية قديمة تدور حول العدل والحساب بعد البعث في الحياة الآخرة، وتتألف المحكمة من أوزوريس في الصدارة ومن حوله إيزيس وحورس. يبدأ الحساب، وتشرع المحكمة في مقاضاة كل حاكم وإبراز ما له وما عليه خلال فترة حُكمه، بحيث تنتهي بكلٍّ منهم إما في النعيم الأبدي أو في مقام التافهين.
