سرد المؤلف هذه المادة في عدد من الأبواب، وقدم لها بمقدمة ضمنها نصوص في السؤال عن العمر يوم القيامة، ونصًا في النهي عن وضع العلم في غير أهله، ونصوصًا في الأمر بالعمل بالعلم، وشعر في فضل العلم والعمل به. ثم قسم الكتاب إلى أبواب ابتدأها بـ «باب في التغليظ على من ترك العمل بالعلم وعدل إلى ضده وخلاف مقتضاه في الحكم» وختمه بـ «باب ذم التسويف». وقد تباينت أحوال أسانيد الكتاب صحة وضعفًا، ونرى المؤلف قد اكتفى بمجرد جمع النصوص دون انتقاء الثابت منها، بل أورد ما هو ظاهر الضعف عملًا بقول المحدثين: «من أسند لك فقد أحالك».
